The Difference Between Types and Genres

This is the first step needed to creating your game. You must know what type of game you are making and what genres the game is aiming at before it can be successful. Many users get confused and believe that the game type is the game genre. However that’s not true.

Examples of Game Types would be Action, Strategy and Role-Playing.

Examples of Game Genres would be Fantasy, Mystery, Romance.

Game types effect how the balance between story and gameplay.

Game genres effect what elements the story is going to contain.

Your Game Type

Depending on your game type, you’ll have a different approach to the story. When deciding upon your game type you should be thinking “How much story time should I include in this game type?”. E.g. The player would not expect to be reading tons of dialogue to proceed in an action game.

I’ll post some information on all the game types below. If you think I am missing any or would like to me to add some in please post in the comment section.

Action games

Action games would involve much greater speed and fast timing then the other game types. These would include many plat former games such as the popular Mario series where the player jumps from platforms to platforms. Most action games today are first person shooters e.g. the James Bond series.

If you are looking for a successful action game to analyse and get some ideas to design your own you should check out “Half Life”.

Convert your RPG Maker XP and RPG Maker 2000/2003

sprites to RPG Maker VX using this amazing tool!

Are your RPG Maker VX charsets not working in-game correct? Do you want to get your RPG Maker XP charsets or RPG Maker 2000/2003 charsets to work in RPG Maker VX? Look no further! This simple program will allow you to convert any charset to work with VX.

Here are two sprites I created in RPG Maker XP format using a sprite maker. They’re greeen lol.

Here are the same sprites that work in VX after using the Character Converter. You will be amazed by this.

You can do all this in 3 simple steps!

Step 1.
Choose which format the image is in. RPG Maker 2000/2003 or RPG Maker XP

Step 2.
Pick if you are converting one file or an entire folder of images!

Step 3.
Choose what to change with my example. (I chose “The first from the left is cut.”)

Step 4.

This Tutorial was request by RPG_Addict in the “Request A Tutorial!” section of the blog.

The Requirements

Alright, so many of you may be wondering exactly how can you create a custom window skin? Well, it gets really easy once you know what you are doing so here’s a quick guide to get you understanding!

First, your windowskin would need to be sized to 128 x 128 pixels. To get the best quality from them you’ll want a 32-bit PNG format.

You’ll need to use a graphic making program to do this. You could use MS Paint or paint.NET. Both are free program. (I’ll make a new post soon as to where to get paint.NET and a few other resources from.)

Or if you have it, you could use Adobe PhotoShop C2/C3/C4!

After doing this you are ready for the next step.

Of course, this is for RPG Maker VX and RPG Maker VX Game Projects only.

The Steps

To be able to create a successful Custom Window Skin using correct colours, you’ll need to learn the 6 letters. Once you learn these, you’ll be able to create your own Custom Window Skin for RPG Maker VX Games in no time!

Letter A. Window Background

This part would be 64 x 64 pixiels. You’ll be putting this in the top left section of your window skin. You’ll want to use solid colours for this. To get the best effects out of it, try experimenting with gradients and other patterns. E.g. You could try putting star shades onto it and see how that turns out. Be creative and have fun!

Letter B. Window Frame – Effects on the Background

I love this part! You would want this part to be 64 x 64 pixiels and put it at the bottom left corner. It will put effects over your background. You could put any pattern you wish on this and see how it looks. E.g. this default windowksin will put lines over the background giving the message a better overall effect. So it works like another image onto the background.

Letter C. Window Frame & Scrolling Arrows

Alright. The tricky part. You’ll need the corners to be 16 x 16 pixiels yet keeping the frame size at a width of 16 to give it that curvy effect. This would cover the border of the windowskin. The inside would cover the arrows shown when the window is scrolling up, down, left or right in-game. I usually leave this alone and just change the colours, but you can try to customise it and change the arrow shapes. You never know you might make something really special!

Letter D.  The Flashing Border

This would be the thing that shows a flashing border on your window skin in-game. It flashes whatever you are selecting. If you have not noticed this before, open up a VX game and look at your menu. You’ll notice whatever you’ve selected is flashing. Again I usually leave this, but if you want you can customize to fit you.

Letter E. Arrow Boxes

These arrows are the arrows that animate moving upwards and downwards right in the centre bottom of the windowksin each time you are reading a piece of text. My recommendation would be to make these arrows the same at the ones in Letter C. But again it’s all up to you.

Letter F.

Ah….finally! The final letter. These will show you the 36 colours used in your RPG Maker VX Game Project. The first colour would be the default colour. To change the text colour in game you’d use the “n[colournumberhere]” command. More detail of this will appear on the blog in the future. You can change these colours to what you want, but I highly recommend leaving them as they are.

RPG Clichés that need to die is a topic about RPG roles and happenings which have become too familiar. Apparently it has been recognized by the International Association of Cliche Eradication as the most comprehensive collection of roleplaying game cliches assembled by a single person in 2006. So it’s something which all writers should look at if they want to create a unique role-play game.

I think this will become very useful for RPG writers and game designers. If you’re already creating a role-play game, try to see if you have one of these clichés added. If not then it probably means you’re well on your way to create a game which is unique to most. If you have then it’s probably okay but it won’t work well if you’re trying tomake your game unique and stand out from the rest.

At one time or other you are most likely asking yourself the question “How can I possibly improve my project? It’s not the best….but I don’t know how to improve it….“. Worry no more. One of the best ways to improving a project is to analyse other games. Through demos, images and simple content. This is why there is a new catergorie to the blog called “Game Projects“.

Within this category you will find posts, demos and adverts of other successful projects and games both completed and currently in works. These will be able to help you gain new ideas, new motivation and make that game better!

At Last…..It’s Time To Know Your Game!

At last….I will soon be less busy and therefore the time has finally come to start explaining the use of story and character development.

You may wish to bookmark this URL or find some method to rechecking the blog regularly. The reason is, I do plan to do a lot of blogging here and I’ve been told by many when I get straight to the point I can give some of the most fascinating advice to video game design.

I know a lot of people get stuck on what to call there RPG’s, the names of the characters or classes and other events within the game. Worry no more, all you need is to use a random generator. I’ll post the top three I found below.

2. [LINK MOVED TO NEW BLOG] – This website has some brilliant mystic weapon names. I use it a lot for my “EtherealMemory” characters simply because they use more mysterious themes with the names.
